What output format do the color separations use?
A single layered PSD with each colour on its own layer. Flat PNG per plate, TIFF and film-ready output are produced in your prepress software from that PSD.
Does it generate underbase, halftones or registration marks?
Channeling (beta) handles the press side of separation: trapping, a base under every motif at a chosen percentage, a solid ground under everything, screens in print order, and a Multichannel Photoshop file with a positive per screen. Halftone screening, registration marks and film or CTS output are still done in your RIP or separation software from those files. Color Separation on its own returns colour layers only.
What kind of artwork works best?
Flat-colour and vector-style designs, which is most textile print work. Photographic and simulated-process art will separate, but expect manual cleanup and plan to build the underbase yourself.
Can I try it on a real job first?
