The Cloth Dyed Before It Was Woven

What if the pattern existed before the cloth did?

The inside story of a design inspired by a silk patola woven in 19th-century Gujarat.

In double ikat, both sets of threads, the warp and the weft, are tied and dyed before the loom is set up. The pattern exists in the yarn first, and only appears when the two dyed sets cross, thread by thread. Where they miss by a thread, the edge blurs.

3The sprigInside every cell, a sprig. A green bud, two turmeric petals, and a cross to stand on.

4The ikat edgeAnd the edge. Why is every step soft? Because two dyed threads never meet exactly.

Patola Cell Jaal

What if we kept only the cell? The outline that holds every sprig.

Step for step, as woven. Cream line, madder inside, dark ground between. Half-dropped, the way the cloth stacks them.

Print 2 · Buta

Rosette Butti

Then the rosette. It sits beside the cells, in columns of its own.

One rosette, lifted whole, becomes a butti. A smaller one, in turmeric, fills the gaps.

Sprig Two-way

And inside the cell? The small flower nobody looks at first.

Bud, petals, cross. Turned both ways, so the cloth can be cut from either end.

Last, the thing only this technique makes. The soft edge.

One hundred and sixty real steps, each used once, enlarged until the blur becomes the print.
